Amidst of civil unrests in Shanghai in 1936, with the civil war looming
over the country, a blind former American diplomat and an impoverished
Russian countess working as a bar-girl and a taxi dancer in order to
support her family, meet. The plot revolves around an elegant night club
– the White Countess...
While
filming the documentary The Delhi Way, James Ivory met Ismail Merchant,
an Indian producer with whom he set up a production company
Merchant-Ivory that produced all his films. The collection of his works
shall be divided into three parts: in India (Heat and Dust, Bombay
Talkie...), in America (The Europeans. The Bostonians...) and for the
Connoisseurs, a category that captures all of his major works: Maurice,
A Room with a View, Howards End and The Remains o f
the Day. The script for The White Countess, just as for The Remains of
the Day, was written by Kazuo Ishiguro. The White Countess is Ivory’s
last film produced by Ismail Merchant who passed away in 2005.
