The
show Baba Jaga Laid an Egg is based on the novel by Dubravka Ugrešić
that redefines the original myth of the Baba Jaga witch and tells a
three-part modern fairytale of family misunderstanding, ageing and the
search for love. An intimate tragicomic tale is set in transitional Novi
Zagreb under a bird attack, a Bulgarian summer resort and a Czech spa.
In three parts, all
different in genres, the characters’ journey explores old age through
intimate stories of political and social
contemporaneity. The main characters of Baba
Jaga struggle with loneliness, hypertrophied emotions and feelings of
powerlessness and lack of belongingness. Through the interplay of
different genres, discourses and styles, the tale revives the ancient
myth of female emancipation, which is authentically Slavenic, but
applicable for all eras and areas.
The focal project of Rijeka Summer Nights of 2011 based on Dubravka
Ugrešić’s novel, a Croatian writer with an international career and
reputation, and one of Croatia’s most successful writers, shall bring to
the festival’s stage, besides the hometown’s star cast headed by Olivera
Baljak, the divas of Croatian and Slovenian theatre: Ana Karić, Alma
Prica and Milena Zupančič.
